What this test is
The test measures prostate-specific antigen in blood. Levels can rise with benign enlargement, prostatitis, urinary obstruction, or after examinations and cycling, so certain activities are avoided before sampling.

PSA
PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland, used to screen for and monitor prostate conditions in men. Raised levels occur in cancer but also in harmless prostate enlargement.
What it is used for, and who should test
- Prostate cancer screening in men from around age 50, or earlier with higher risk
- Following treatment for prostate cancer or benign enlargement
- Assessing difficult urination, frequent night urination or blood in urine alongside other tests
