What this test is
The test measures alpha-fetoprotein in blood, produced by the fetal liver and falling after birth. Raised adult levels must be interpreted with imaging and liver history, as hepatitis or cirrhosis can also raise them.

AFP
AFP is a protein that often rises in people at risk of liver cancer. It is used with ultrasound or imaging to monitor patients with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B and C.

- Regular surveillance in cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis B or C
- Following treatment response in liver cancer alongside imaging
- Testing during pregnancy when a doctor considers it appropriate for fetal risk assessment

Does a high AFP mean liver cancer?
Not necessarily. Hepatitis, cirrhosis and pregnancy can raise AFP, so doctors interpret it with ultrasound and other tests.
How often should people with cirrhosis be tested?
Guidelines generally advise periodic liver cancer surveillance set by your doctor, combined with abdominal ultrasound.
How should I prepare for AFP?
