BUN measures the nitrogen from waste products in your blood, most of which the kidneys remove. It helps assess kidney function and the body's water balance.
The test measures urea nitrogen produced when the body breaks down protein. Raised levels may reflect reduced kidney function, dehydration, gastrointestinal bleeding or a very high protein intake, so it is read together with creatinine.
