The test measures triglycerides, the storage form of dietary energy. Very high values can cause acute pancreatitis and are associated with fatty liver disease.

Triglycerides are blood fats strongly influenced by food, body weight and alcohol. High levels increase the risk of pancreatitis and heart disease.
