What this test is
The test measures uric acid in blood. When levels are too high, crystals can form in joints and kidneys, causing sudden joint pain or kidney stones.

Uric acid is a waste product from purines in food and body cells. Raised levels are linked to gout, kidney stones and metabolic syndrome.
What it is used for, and who should test
- Investigating sudden red, swollen, painful joints, especially the big toe or ankle
- Monitoring people with gout who take urate-lowering medicine
- Assessing metabolic risk alongside lipids and glucose

- Fast for 8-10 hours. Avoid high-purine foods and alcohol for 24 hours before the test.

Not always. Some people have high levels without symptoms, and others have attacks with only mildly raised levels, so doctors diagnose using symptoms and results together.
What should I avoid before testing?
For at least 24 hours, avoid organ meats, red meat, some seafood, beer and high-fructose drinks to reduce variability.
How should I prepare for Uric Acid?
Fast for 8-10 hours. Avoid high-purine foods and alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
How long do results take?
