What this test is
The test measures the proportion of haemoglobin that has become glycated, which accumulates in step with blood glucose over the ~90-120 day lifespan of a red cell. Fasting does not affect it.

Hb A1C
HbA1c reflects your average blood glucose over the previous two to three months. It is used to confirm a diabetes diagnosis and to track control better than a single glucose reading.

Why is fasting not needed for HbA1c?
It reflects long-term average glucose rather than a single moment, so recent food does not meaningfully change the result.
Can HbA1c replace a glucose test?
They complement each other. HbA1c does not show hypoglycaemia or daily swings, so doctors usually consider both.
