What this test is
The test separates haemoglobin proteins to measure the proportions of HbA, HbA2 and HbF and to detect abnormal types such as HbE and Hb Constant Spring, distinguishing carriers from different forms of thalassaemia.

Hb typing
Hb typing identifies which types of haemoglobin are present in your red blood cells. It is used to screen for and confirm haemoglobin disorders such as thalassaemia and thalassaemia carrier status.

Does being a thalassaemia carrier need treatment?
Most carriers have no symptoms and need no treatment, but it is worth discussing the risk of passing the condition to children with a doctor, especially if both partners are carriers.
