Spirometry (lung function test)

Spirometry testing measures lung volumes and airflow by blowing into a device. It is used to monitor people exposed to dust, fumes and chemicals at work.

Who this service is for

  • Workers exposed to dust, fumes or chemical vapours, such as welding, grinding, woodwork and manufacturing
  • Smokers, or anyone with a persistent cough, breathlessness on exertion or reduced exercise tolerance
  • Patients whose doctor is monitoring asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

What is checked

  • Measurement of lung volumes and airflow, including FVC and FEV1
  • Comparison with reference values and previous tests when available
  • Interpretation and advice by a doctor
  • Referral or additional testing arranged when abnormalities are found

Preparation and documents

  • Avoid heavy meals within 2 hours of testing so you can blow fully
  • Avoid smoking for at least 1 hour before the test
  • Tell our staff about inhalers or inhaled medicines, as your doctor may adjust timing before testing
  • Wear clothing that is not tight across the chest or abdomen

Testing takes about 15-30 minutes and requires several full efforts to be reliable. Results come as numbers and graphs a doctor uses to explain and track your trend.
